First Day

So proud of my little school boys

With so many birthdays and happenings this summer, the start of school just crept up on us. Tyler had just finished his big birthday weekend and then we had open house the next day. It’s a lot for a little boy to take in, but really every day, even less eventful days, seems like a fun adventure in their minds.

Their school experience at this new school is special in a few ways – one way is that BOTH boys are going to school – another is that their cousins are there as well and Ashlyn and Austin even share a class. I love that they are getting a spiritual foundation in their every day lessons. What’s kind of crazy is that I went there for Bible school as a child and Lisa actually went to preschool there, although the church was much smaller then.

Now it’s huge and almost intimidating but the boys didn’t seem to mind the vast open spaces and numerous classrooms, which are all playfully customized for the preschool and Sunday school programs. It just feels like a happy place, it’s super clean and organized and also has the best playground I’ve ever seen!

I particularly like that Tyler’s teacher came by our house for a visit to meet him last week and Austin’s teacher held a playdate. It helped his comfort level --- and mine too..

Both Scott and I went to open house and it was fun to meet Lisa, Dean and kids in the 2 year old classroom – I hope Ashlyn and Austin don’t have too much fun ;).

Tyler wasn't too easy to wake up early :)
This is Austin’s first school experience and he will only go 2 days a week, but we had a long talk about it the night before and it seemed to help, because he did great! I emphasized that “mommy will be back,” and I know having Ashlyn there gave him peace of mind, too. When getting in the car to go to school, the boys had asked if they get to go to the playground and I told them to ask their teacher. So when the carpool lady opened up Austin’s door, he immediately asked “Can we go to the playground?” and that thought still being on his mind told me he was going to be ok. (Watching him get carried to the entrance and doted on by the teachers did make me tear up a bit, though.)

Tyler looked more anxious than I’d seen him on past first days, but he was beaming when the teacher brought him back to the car and she said he’d had a “fantastic day!” which was also reflected on his behavior card. He told me he’d been a very good boy and that daddy would be so happy!

Tyler has not been in school since early March, and I am loving the difference in the amount of details I received from his day. He described the art he did and told me about his friends. He also detailed the bad behavior of some of the other boys, saying that he, one other boy and “ALL the girls” were very good, though – ha.

He is excited to go back tomorrow and even Austin told me he’d like to go back before he went down for a nap. So in the end, I was the only one that shed any tears on their first day…

Tyler got to be the first to celebrate turning 4 with his classmates

Tyler's Bday Continued

We seem to have a pattern of holding the party on a day other than the actual birthday, which leaves the real birthday open for lots of other fun. We hit the zoo and then did a small family dinner in downtown Woodstock at Firestone. It was cute that the guy playing guitar and singing sang HB to Tyler and he was all about blowing out more candles.

Party Time

sweet boy trying on his hat before the party
Playing catch-up! This summer was a series of "party times" as the boys excitedly call the days we were hosting guests. And there was no bigger Party Time than Tyler's birthday -- at least in this little boy's eyes. He'd watched as we celebrated each of our birthdays this summer -- my mom's, Gigi's, grandma's, his brother, both of his cousins, mine, Lisa's, Scott's -- and on and on.

So when his big day finally came he could not believe it and we all laughed as we watched him during the party -- he was excited beyond speech and in a state of awe that we jokingly called his "birthday coma." Tyler is so expressive and boisterous about life that you know he's seriously excited when he appears calm ....I just love this little boy and the age of 4 is proving to be the most amazing and delightful time yet.

luckily, my sister caught some awesome action moments

Austin was either running around at full speed -- or competely resting like captured by my sistere here

This about sums up Tyler's enthusiasm for a party -- especially his! ;)
