…the beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

I didn’t think it was possible, but I feel like this trip is making the boys and I even closer. How much closer can you be than spending 24/7 with each other, but even in their early age, it’s like we are somehow on a little adventure together. I’m their anchor in this new place – their source of security -- and they are my life, of course.

They were wonderful on the ride down. I don’t recall Austin crying at all and Tyler’s discontent was easily fixed with Yo Gabba Gabba episodes and the assembly line of snacks I handed to him from the front seat. Truly the amount of muffins, puffs and cookies that child ate would have made me put on 10 pounds. I’m jealous.

While Tyler passed the time with his DVDs, I had (hands-free phone) conversations with Lisa, Mandy and Crissy that helped entertain me. Somehow, our nursery-on-wheels made it in 6 hours, which I had not dared hope.

But what’s even more refreshing than the easy ride, is how Tyler and Austin are playing so well together. When Austin arrived back in June, Tyler couldn’t believe he had a baby to look at all of the time, but he soon started having attachment issues (enter “Bear”) and most recently he simply ignored little Austin’s attempts at playing. But, the hero worship of big brother is already in full swing, and Austin is overjoyed that Tyler is actually interested, and over the past 24 hours, I’ve seen a significant shift in Tyler that I captured with a few photos as well.

Exhaustion must make me sappy, because I tear up at the idea of them starting a beautiful friendship and I believe that a sibling relationship is really like no other, and have of course experienced it firsthand with Lisa. In fact, I recently read in Psychology Today that no other connection has such a defining effect on your life, and no other person will ever know you as long as a sibling does (from birth and beyond your parent’s lives). The shared life journey can equally bond you and complicate the relationship, so it’s definitely got its highs and lows, and these rough patches can start as early as Tyler’s age with competition for toys and parent’s attention.

But whatever I can do as a mom to help make this a meaningful friendship, I will do with all my heart and hope they too realize one day how intertwined and essential they are to each other.

Tyler let Austin wear his hat.
Already giving wet willies!
